This is a photograph of my friend Katie. Collaboration means working together and it is what I hope occurs in all of my portraits. I might decide the setting or have suggestions but I let the attitude and often the clothing come from the model. My job is to recognize the moment when it happens and, hopefully, capture it in a photograph. Sometimes, I have a narrative in mind and at other times, I follow the model’s lead and innate knowing. Photographic portraiture is a way for me to express the inherent beauty I see in a person. I want to have a fun experience together and that is perhaps the underlying essence of a any collaborative work of art.
